In our U-pick Saskatoon orchard, we offer four different varieties of saskatoons – Northline, Honeywood, Thiessen and Smokey. Each variety has its own unique flavour and appearance but all of them are delicious whether they are picked fresh or frozen for later use. The saskatoons are usually ready for harvest in late July and early August for u-pickers and we always have a supply of frozen berries available in the fall. We do have recipes on hand for making pies, jellies, jams and sauces.
Our U-pick raspberry patch features the Red Mammoth and the fruit is ready for picking through the month of August and into September. We planted some new varieties of raspberries in a test plot in the spring of 2010 and these bushes will be in production this summer.
We also have a limited number of chokecherry bushes. Chokecherries are very tart when eaten fresh but they make a wonderful syrup or jelly. The bush also produces a very fragrant blossom in the spring and a beautiful red & yellow foliage in the fall so they make a nice addition to a yard.
We also have rhubarb available for our U-Pick customers and can provide some excellent recipes for rhubarb-saskatoon jam, crisps and pies.
